MODERN CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING: THE POPES CONFRONT THE INDUSTRIAL AGE 1740-1958
Joe Holland. Paulist Press 2004, 404 pages, paperback, $29.95.

This book tells the story of the development of Catholic Social Teaching from its early roots in the
papal response to the European Enlightenment of the 18th Century through to the emergence of the
“grand strategy” of Pope Leo XIII, which held through five popes and came to its conclusion with Pope
Pius XII. The “Leonine strategy” contributed powerfully to the social reform of laissez-faire capitalism,
supported state regulation of the market and workers’ right to form unions, and earned the Catholic
Church the loyalty of the new immigrant industrial working class in the English-speaking countries,
even though that loyalty was already lost to the Church in Western Europe.

BEYOND THE DEATH PENALTY: THE DEVELOPMENT IN CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING
D. Michael McCarron & Joe Holland. Pax Romana Center, 208 pages, paperback, $13.99

In recent years, and especially through the leadership of the late Pope John Paul II, Catholic Social
Doctrine has become strongly opposed to capital punishment in practically all cases. The Catholic
Church’s opposition to the death penalty is based on its sup-port for a consistent ethic of life for all of
humanity. This consistent ethic also includes defending the unborn, the handicapped, victims of
human rights abuses, and countless others whose human dignity is violated.

This book is a collection of papers gathered as part of the Florida Council of Catholic Scholarship’s
Project on Catholic Social Teaching against the Death Penalty. It is produced by the Pax Romana
Center for International Study of Catholic Social Teaching. Both bodies are located at Saint Thomas
University in Miami Gardens, Florida.

"THE EARTH CHARTER": A STUDY BOOK OF REFLECTION FOR ACTION
Elisabeth Ferrero & Joe Holland. Redwoods Press, 2005, 185 pages, paperback, $19.95

The Earth Charter offers the possibility of establishing through the United Nations a major soft-law
document for ecology, equivalent to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the social field.
This book explains the historical context that gave rise to the Earth Charter, sketches the role of the
United Nations in calling for the Earth Charter, and reviews the creation of the Earth Charter
document itself, as well as the movement behind it. Finally it offers a detailed commentary on the
entire document, a copy of the Earth Charter text, a grass-roots study guide, and an annotated
bibliography.

PETER MAURIN: APOSTLE TO THE WORLD
Dorothy Day & Francis J. Sicius. Orbis Books, 2004, paperback, $20.00

This is the life story of Peter Maurin, co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement and one of the most
visionary and prophetic lay figures in the promotion of Catholic Social Teaching within the United
States. The story is based on an incomplete manuscript written by Dorothy Day, the other co-founder
of the Catholic Worker Movement. It is enhanced by the extensive research and written contributions
of Dr. Francis Sicius. Of special interest is Dr. Sicius’ chapter of Peter Maurin’s vision of the “Green
Revolution,” which was not in Dorthy Day’s manuscript. This chapter demonstrates that Peter Maurin
was not only a prophet of social justice and peace, but also of ecological justice, and that he saw the
latter as foundational for the former.
